土耳其伊斯坦堡市長伊瑪莫魯（Ekrem Imamoglu）於當地時間19號凌晨遭到逮捕，根據美國有線電視新聞網土耳其頻道（CNN Türk ）報導，伊瑪莫魯遭控與犯罪組織有關，並且涉及賄賂等罪因此遭到逮捕。伊瑪莫魯被視為現任總統艾爾段（Recep Tayyip Erdogan）的主要政敵，因此警方的逮捕行動，被部分政治分析家解讀為艾爾段先下手為強，除掉選舉的競爭對手。
在伊瑪莫魯遭捕的前一天，伊斯坦堡大學就已經先行發布聲明，撤銷伊瑪莫魯的學位，沒有了大學學歷，伊瑪莫魯將無法參加總統大選，這也將衝擊在野共和人民黨（Republican People's Party, CHP）的選情，因為共和人民黨原本預計在幾天後提名伊瑪莫魯為下屆總統大選參選人。
根據當地媒體Hürriyet Daily News報導，警方一早就到伊瑪莫魯的家中搜索，並將其帶回伊斯坦堡警察總部。過程中，伊瑪莫魯在自己的社群媒體帳號發布一段影片，聲稱「人民的意志是不會被被違法行為給消音的」。
而對於外界質疑總統艾爾段透過司法行動消滅政敵，艾爾段稍早前也反駁，並稱土耳其司法是獨立公正的。
