The service, provided by the "iTaiwan WiFi" system run by the government, was made available at the 12 Taiwan High Speed Rail stations and aboard all bullet trains north of Hsinchu on Wednesday.
The free service will be extended to all sections of the line by the end of the year.
The launch marked the partial fulfillment of a government promise that Wi-Fi service would be ready before the 2017 Taipei Universiade, which opens on Saturday.
To use the service, apply for a free "iTaiwan WiFi" account at https://itaiwan.gov.tw/en/
